See Lindsey Run. Run, Lindsey, Run!

October 13th, 2009

Well, folks – I did it: I finished my first 10K! Yay! I was no Molly Huddle, who clocked in with a net time of 32:07 (that’s a 5 minute mile people!), but I finished respectfully – and alive – with my 8:55 per mile pace.

It could not have been a more beautiful day for a run. It was a balmy high of 54 degrees in Boston, but with the gorgeous sun shining down, it felt just right. The course was the perfect running route, beginning at Park Street, followed by a lap along the Charles River, looping back down Commonwealth Avenue, and ending back at the Boston Commons. Over 7,000 women came out to walk, run, and sprint (ahem, Molly Huddle) their way through the 10K course, all to the “girl power” slogan of “Start Strong, Finish Stronger.”

I got to the Commons early to pick up my race number, and decided to take advantage of all of the fun health and fitness tents.

Cascadian Farm was there with a slew of cereals and granola bars.

And so was Luna, with their Luna Bars and new Luna Sport Moons. The fun little gummy moons are designed as an alternative to energy gels for runners, and pack 100 calories per 6 gummies. I thought the Blueberry was really yummy, but the Pomegranate kind of tasted like cough syrup – yuck. Not what I would want to taste in the last leg of a marathon.

I absolutely loved this beanie!

I ended up bringing home so many Luna and Lara Bars that I’ve decided to do a post on Luna vs. Lara (stay tuned snackers).

Finally, it was race time! I stretched out with Jennie, Alanna, and Janel, and then took my place at the starting line!

Whew! With so much pep in my step during the race, I was exhausted afterwards; exhausted but proud. We were all winners for running that day! #1s for everyone!

If you’ve never ran a race before – or never ran in your life – there is still time!   I didn’t start running long distances until last year, and now I’m hooked. My advice: start small, and work your way up. Start out with a goal of running in a 3K or 5K first, and before you know it, you could be running all 26 miles of the Boston Marathon!  Also, it helps if you tell people your goals.  The more people you tell, the more accountable you will feel for fulfilling them, and you’ll be more likely to push yourself to follow through.

Check out Active.com to find races near you, of all varying levels and lengths.

Now, go fill in the blanks!!!  See ____ Run.  Run, _____, Run!

.

Happy Snacking,

Lindsey

Canned Pumpkin Shortage!

October 10th, 2009

Ok, now this is TOO funny.

In my last post, I rambled on about how I swore there was a canned pumpkin shortage in the Boston area.  I really could not find it anywhere.  I even joked with my friend, Corinne, that I was going to start bidding for it on eBay if none turned up.  Well turns out, I wasn’t too far off!

Apparently last year was a terrible crop season for the pumpkin industry.  Between the overly damp weather, and the powdery mildew infection in many U.S. pumpkin patches, the stock of viable pumpkin meat was slim. The lack of surplus from last year has translated into pumpkin-free shelves for this fall season. Libby’s makes up 80-90% of the canned pumpkin market, so chances are, their crop loss is contributing to your fall baking drought.

Did you know that canned pumpkin is not actually made from traditional carving pumpkins? Libby’s invented their own strain of pumpkin, called the Libby’s Select Dickinson Pumpkin, which they use for canning. These pumpkins are a light tan color, shaped more like squash, and tend to be much meatier than carving, or field, pumpkins.

Barren bake-shelves got you down? Check out the random sites where I found canned pumpkin for sale:

Don’t despair if your baking aisle is still pumpkin-free; Libby’s and their 400+ workers in Morton, Illinois are working hard to fulfill bakers’ pumpkin needs, and are hoping to fill those empty shelves soon.

Question of the Day

What’s your favorite fall treat that uses canned pumpkin?

Lindsey

Eat Bling McDonald’s

October 5th, 2009

McDonald’s, your McMoms may have earned you a redemption point from me, but I’m deducting 1/2 a point for this fiasco:

A Chicago man is filing a lawsuit against McDonald’s, claiming he swallowed a gold hoop earring in his sandwich.

McDonald’s at Navy Pier in Chicago

On August 11th, Boguslaw Nedza filed a complaint to McDonald’s, saying that he swallowed an earring while consuming a sandwich, which then became lodged in his throat and stomach. Mr. Nedza claims that the emergency personnel were unable to remove the lodged earring.

Stay tuned for the verdict on this inedible earring disaster snackers.

McMoms Take on Manhattan

October 2nd, 2009

Alright McDonald’s – 1 point for you and your attempt at nutrition redemption…

Nutrition-happy McMoms are spending some quality time at the local McDonald’s in Manhattan, volunteering as supporters of the fact that fast food really CAN be healthy, AND kid friendly – it just takes making the right decisions.

Some of the suggested swaps the Moms had?

The Swap: The Calorie Knock-Out:
Apple Dippers for French Fries -195 calories
Water for Regular Coke -150 calories
McNuggets for Cheeseburger -110 calories

I’m not recommending you grab your rascal and run to the nearest MickeyD’s, but if you’re on the go and need to feed your youngster, it’s good to know that there are healthy alternatives to the McGreasy and the McFatty out there.

P.S. On a side note, I think Burger King’s answer to the Apple Dippers – “Apple Fries” – is an absolutely GENIUS way to turn kids on to fruit – keep spreading the fruit love everyone!

Tropicana Says “Get Your Fruit On!”

July 17th, 2009

Everyone loves a lil O.J. in the A.M. – there’s just something about that pulpy goodness that puts a smile on your face.  Well Tropicana is spreading some of that pulpy goodness with their “Get Your Fruit On!” program by donating a quarter million fruit servings worth of orange juice to the USDA’s Summer Food Service and School Breakfast Programs for kids!  These programs serve free, nutritious meals and snacks to children in low-income areas – what a fabulous donation!

Tropicana touts orange juice as providing 2 whole servings of fruit and a full day’s worth of vitamin C per each 8 ounce glass.  Kudos to Tropicana for spreading the joy of fruit – especially since 7 out of 10 Americans aren’t getting enough fruit in their diet!

Happy Snacking,

Lindsey
